Career
Thaniyavartanam (1987)
Assam Thaniyavartam DisplaySibi Malayil and E. K. Lohithadas worked together on the 1987 Malayalam drama film Thaniyavartanam. Kaviyoor Ponnamma, Mammootty as schoolteacher Balagopalan, and Mukesh as maternal uncle Gopinathan Thilakan, representing a patriarchal household, were all featured. In addition to garnering praise from critics, Thilakan took home the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor.
A typical Kerala joint family has two children, a wife, a mother, and Balan Maash, an art teacher from a small village in Kerala. His revolutionary brother Gopi also lives in the household. The mentally handicapped uncle of Balan Maash. His uncle fell mentally unwell after splitting up with his sweetheart. This occurrence highlights the family’s deeply held conviction that there will be a mentally sick man in every generation because someone in the previous generation threw the goddess idol down the well, which was a sin. The deity drove him mad with a curse. This curse is going to last for generations.
The question of “Who will be next? When Balan Maash’s uncle dies, the phrase “comes up.”One night, Balan had a nightmare that alters everything. Some people started to question Balan’s sanity and his road to his uncle’s lunacy because of his uncle’s mental condition and disturbing dreams. He ultimately became a member of his family’s circle and was accepted into an asylum. Doctors say he’s fine, but society doesn’t think so. Because he is helpless, Balan plays the fool. His mother ultimately poisons him in an attempt to cut him off from the outer world.
Critics praised it right from the beginning. The film addresses very few topics, including the decline of the once-proud Nair joint families, the perspective on mental illness, superstition and conservatism in rural Kerala, and inequity among generations. However, the script for Lohithadas is renowned for its accurate depiction of reality and scientific veracity.
Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989)
Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, and Balan K. Nair starred in the 1989 Indian epic historical drama film Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, which was directed by Hariharan and scripted by M. T. Vasudevan Nair. The movie took home eight Kerala State Film Awards in addition to four National Film Awards.
The 16th century takes place in northern Kerala. The plot is centered around Kannappan Chekavar’s Puthooram home. After the boy’s parents pass away, Kannappan Chekavar adopts him and takes him to Puthuram, where he will live with family and pursue his education. While his uncle loves and respects the quick orphan Chando, his stepbrother Aromal Chekavar hates him. As they get older, Chando becomes engaged to Unniyarcha, Chekavar’s daughter. Following a series of incidents, Aromal puts Chando in a tight spot. He flees to Kali while working for Chekavar Aringodar as a Tulunadan specialist.
The subplot of the medieval poem Vadakkan Pattukal serves as the basis for this movie, which is frequently hailed as a classic of Malayalam cinema. In contrast to the evil character who misinterprets Chandu Chekavar in folktales, the story recounts the life of Chandu Chekavar, who is finally shown as an unlucky, misunderstood, and respectable individual (literally Chandu the Betrayer).
Mathilukal (1990)
The 1990 Indian Malayalam film Mathilukal, written, directed, and produced by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, was based on Vaikom Muhammad Basheer’s autobiographical novel of the same name. In addition to four National Film Awards, it took home eight Kerala State Film Awards.
The movie is a life story of Mothi M. E.’s Basheer.
